Admission to the Old Camp is a main quest in Gothic. On completion you will join the shadows of the Old Camp.
You have to complete either this quest, Admission to the New Camp or Admission to the Swamp Camp to be able to advance in the story.
How to obtain the quest
At the start of the game Diego talks to you and makes you an offer to join the Old Camp. If you brushed him off at the start, you can still find him in front of the gate of the castle of the Old Camp. Inquire about joining the Old Camp and he will direct you to Thorus.
How to solve the quest
Thorus is guarding the gate of the castle of the Old Camp. Ask him about joining Gomez's men and he will direct you back to Diego. Ask Thorus to give you another quest. Eventually he will relent and give you Thorus' Quest.
Return to Diego and he will tell you everything you need to know about joining the Old Camp: You need to pass the Test of Faith and you also need to collect brownie points from Gomez's men in the outer ring.
The Test of Faith
The Test of Faith is given to you by Diego. Refer to its article for more information.
Scatty's approval
Facing the entrance of the castle of the Old Camp turn left and keep following the path hugging the castle wall until you find the arena. There you will find Scatty. Ask him about joining the Old Camp. He tells you to fight one of the other fighters. You have the option of fighting Kirgo and Kharim.
Fighting Kirgo
Kirgo is reluctant but will fight you, if you insist. He is not very strong. The sum of your strength and your weapon's damage need to exceed 45 to be able to damage him.
If you win, Scatty will approve of you, but a loss will actually hinder your admission to the camp.
Fighting Kharim
Kharim is the stronger fighter and will only agree to fight you, if you insult his honor as a member of the New Camp.
Kharim is very strong and will likely knock you down with a swift series of strikes, if he makes contact with you. The sum of your strength and your weapon's damage need to exceed 55 to be able to damage him.
One way of defeating him is side-stepping as he does a running attack towards you. When he run past you and has his back to you, quickly hit him once or twice and backstep to create some distance, so that he does another running attack, which you again side-step.
You can also buy an Ice Block spell scroll from Cronos to freeze him and knock him down without resistance. Note that due to a glitch in the game, you need to have at least two Ice Block scrolls in your inventory for it to have an effect.
Even if you lose, Scatty respects your courage, but a win will grant you more points towards admission.
Whistler's approval
Facing the entrance of the castle of the Old Camp turn right and keep following the path hugging the castle wall until you find a hut with the shadow Whistler sitting in front of it. Ask him, if he has a job for you.
He asks you to get his sword from Fisk. Take his 100 ore nuggets and go to Fisk. Fisk demands 110 ore nuggets for the sword. Do not tell him that he wanted to sell it to Whistler for less or the quest fails! Either pay the extra 10 ore nuggets yourself or go back to Whistler and ask for them.
The sword is pretty good at the beginning and you may want to use it yourself for a while, but after 2 days Whistler will assume that you stole the ore nuggets and attack you!
Both bringing the sword back or keeping the ore nuggets for yourself will help you towards admission to the camp.
Fingers' approval
Ask Diego who can teach you something and he tells you to go to Fingers. You can find Fingers by going left facing the entrance of the castle of the Old Camp. Fingers can teach you picklocking and pickpocketing. If you want to learn sneaking, he directs you towards Cavalorn. If you have learned any of those talents, he will approve of your admission to the camp.

After gaining approval
In total you must have at least 16 points. Once you have also passed the Test of Faith and have reached at least level 5, return to Diego and ask him about your standing. Diego then sends you to Gomez.
Talk to Thorus at the entrance to the castle and you will be allowed inside. Now might be a good time to deliver the letter to the fire mages. But to advance the quest enter the big house on the right and talk to Raven. Talking to Gomez without Raven's approval would be a death sentence!
Once Raven has lead you to Gomez and told you to talk to him, talk to Gomez and offer him your services. When he asks why he should accept you, tell him that you have many contacts in the colony. You can choose any of the listed people whether you actually had contact with them before or not except for Y'Berion. If you choose Y'Berion, Gomez will know that you lied to him and kill you. Choose at least 4 options besides Y'Berion and it will be enough to convince Gomez.
At this point you can still choose one of the other camps. Once you ask Gomez, if you're in, the choice is finalized and you are a shadow of the Old Camp.
Gomez tells you to talk to Raven, who will give you a shadow's dress and your next quest: The Big Thing of the Brotherhood
