Several magical barriers appear in the Gothic games. They are magical spheres created by magicians to prevent entry and/or exit from the enclosed area.
General information

Magical barriers are typically big spherical shields covering a certain territory. Most of the time they're transparent but sometimes they show themselves partially with bluish moving lightnings and audible thunder sounds.
Barrier can only be created by experienced and powerful magicians, often with the help of focus stones. The size and function of a barrier depends on the creators' wish. In most cases, it becomes impossible from inside the barrier to leave it alive without intervention from a magician. However, as it happened in Gothic, the process of creation can go out of control and leave the magicians without control over their own creation.
The creation of a magical barrier is a hard and dangerous process, that's why this type of protection is rare and usually ordered directly by the king. After the incident in the Valley of Mines, where the barrier has suddenly expanded and therefore imprisoned the magicians themselves, it became forbidden to raise such constructions, until the orcs' attack on Vengard.

The first magical barrier is encountered in a tunnel connecting Khorinis with the island of Tirith. It was created many years before the start of the game by Buthomar to prevent the return of the Blood Order. A young Xardas destroys it ending the isolation of Tirith.
Xardas finds another sort of magical barrier in the ruins of a temple on Tirith, northwest of the city Initria. .
The barrier in the ruins of the temple takes the form of a magical labyrinth, which must be passed, having discovered by trial and error the right path through the various stages of the puzzle. When Xardas approaches the maze, some parts of it disappear and others reactivate, blocking previously unlocked segments. When the hero manages to get to the other side of the maze, the magical barrier disappears.
