Corristo is the leader of the Magicians of Fire in the Old Camp. He participated in the creation of the magical Barrier of Khorinis, which ended up imprisoning him along with the other convicts and magicians.
Background
Corristo was a fire mage and together with the other magicians created the magical Barrier spanning the Valley of Mines. Due to the influence of the Sleeper the creation of the Barrier went out of control and ended up trapping him inside it. At that time the prisoner Gomez started a rebellion against the guards. According to Xardas Corristo and the other magicians helped Gomez taking power over what would later be called the Old Camp.[1] After the success of the rebellion the magicians took up residence in the chapel of the castle.
Some time later Xardas, the then-leader of the fire mages, started involving himself in the art of the summoning of undead and magical creatures. This unholy practice got him into conflict with Gomez and most of the magicians. To prevent bloodshed Xardas left the Old Camp making Corristo the new leader of the fire mages inside the Barrier.[2]
Disputes between Corristo and Saturas, the leader of the water mages, eventually lead the water mages to leave for the New Camp.[3] While the New Camp is in a hostile relationship with the Old Camp, he maintains contact with them via messengers.
After Milten did a great deed for the Ore Barons, Corristo made him his apprentice; a decision which Milten ascribes to seeking entertainment.[4] All other aspirants failed his test.[5]
Several year before the events of the game a shadow tried to assassinate the leader of the fire mages in his sleep, which resulted in that shadow's remains being scattered around the Old Camp.[6] Due to the change of leadership it is unknown whether that assassination attempt went against Xardas or Corristo.
Personality
Corristo is a devout follower of Innos and his role as a magician defines and fills his entire life. In his view magic is a gift from the gods and he was chosen to be priest, teacher and judge at the same time.[7]
He has no time for common people and allows nobody to disturb him in his study of magic unless they have already proven themselves worthy.[8]
Gothic: The Comic

Corristo is very proud of his status as a magician and looks down upon the common prisoners. While all the other prisoners have to work hard to sustain their existence, the magicians are free to do as they please due to their reputation - a state of affairs which he seeks to preserve.[9]
He recognized an extraordinary talent in Milten the first time he met him and convinced the other fire mages to accept him in their ranks and made him his student.[10] However he is displeased when he finds out about Milten having friends among the common inmates and even in the New Camp. To preserve the reputation of the Fire Mages he forbids him any further contact with such scum and warned him that Brabak is seeking revenge against Gorn.[11]
Gothic
Shortly before the Nameless Hero is thrown into the Barrier he is given a letter for the leader of the fire mages. Milten receives this letter from him and delivers it to Corristo, who is overjoyed and allows the Nameless Hero to pick his own reward from Torrez.

If the Nameless Hero chooses to join the Old Camp as a shadow, he is given an opportunity to join the fire mages after retrieving the minecrawler eggs. Corristo tests him with a series of questions and only permits his admission into the Circle, if he answers all of them correctly. If the Nameless Hero succeeds, Corristo gives him his robes and teaches him in the art of magic.
With help from the Novice Talas and the Nameless Hero Cor Kalom buys the Almanac from Corristo.[12]
After the collapse of the Old Mine Gomez orders an attack on the Free Mine to preserve the flow of magic ore. Corristo forbids him this attack, which causes Gomez to lose trust in him. As a result Gomez has him and the other fire mages in the Old Camp executed.[13]
Function
Corristo advances the player from the rank of shadow to fire mage, which also unlocks him as a teacher and trader.
Teacher: He teaches mana and the circles of magic up to the fourth circle.
Trade: In the third chapter he sells the High Robe of Fire for 1500 ore nuggets.
Gothic II
Inside the old chapel in the Valley of Mines, where the fire mages used to live, there is an unfinished writing by Corristo, which chronicles Gomez' distrust of the Nameless Hero and his intent to warn the water mages about the incoming attack on the Free Mine.[14]
Gothic II: Night of the Raven
If the player is a fire mage and returns Fisk's package, he receives a blank runestone, which he has obtained from Corristo.[15]
Trivia
- In the canceled Gothic Sequel there is a quest about a series of hidden books authored by Corristo chronicling the regime of Gomez and the fall of the fire mages.
- A pre-release internal story document shows that the shadow's assassination attempt was targeted at Xardas to put a stop to his demon summoning experiments and not Corristo.[16]
- Parlan, Quarhodron, Fernando, Erol and Ignaz have his face in Gothic II.
