Gomez is the ruler of the Old Camp.

Background

Gomez was a convict mining ore in the penal colony of Khorinis. Even before the revolt the other prisoners obeyed him.[1] With the unexpected creation of the Barrier he seized the opportunity to kill the distracted guards and led the prisoners' revolt.[2] Being the first to do it, he was in an advantageous position to become the leader of what would become the Old Camp.

Personality

He appears opportunistic, arrogant and prideful. However, he seems to have wits.
The only thing he really wants is power.[3] Nobody is allowed to talk to him without obtaining permission from Raven first.
He is quick to anger and kills people for the slightest offense.
Xardas considers him a barbarian butcher.[4]

Gothic

Gomez is the highest ore baron and the absolute ruler of the Old Camp, which makes him the most powerful man inside the Barrier. In exchange for the magical ore mined in the Old Mine he gets anything he wants - even women - from the king.
Raven is his right hand man and handles all the people, who want to talk to him. Scar and Arto are his bodyguards.
He has a huge army of henchmen consisting of the shadows and the guards, who handle the operation and protection of the mine and the camp.
After the collapse of the Old Mine he sees his position under threat and orders the guards to attack the Free Mine. As Corristo forbids him this attack, Gomez loses trust in the fire mages and has all of them executed in cold blood. The smith Stone too opposes the attack and is imprisoned in the dungeons below the castle for it as his abilities are still deemed useful. Gomez carries the key to his cell on his body.
Eventually the Nameless Hero finds an old teleport rune of Xardas, which lets him teleport into the Old Camp's chapel. When they meet, Gomez acknowledge the Hero as the man, who killed his guards in the Free Mine, and then attacks him.

Function

  • Talking to Gomez is the final step in joining the Old Camp.
  • He is immortal until Xardas sends the player to his old sunken tower.
  • He has the key to the dungeons, in which Stone is imprisoned.

Quests

Gothic II

A bookstand in the castle of the Valley of Mines written by Corristo tells that Gomez's temper got hotter than ever, when he heard of the Old Mine's collapse and that he blames the Nameless Hero for it.
Gomez's name is engraved into two keys, which fit two consecutive doors inside the former ore baron's house. Behind the second door you find a chest containing a Ring of Ore Skin and a Gold Necklace. Once you open it, a lesser skeleton spawns.

Trivia

  • Matteo has his face in Gothic II.
  • In the canceled Gothic Sequel a mage called Igaraz says that Gomez looked for a way to destroy the Barrier and regain his freedom. The fire mages were against it, so Gomez had them all killed in their sleep. He has not been seen since the collapse of the Barrier. This contradicts both Gomez's motivation for killing the fire mages in the first game and a statement by Mike Hoge that Gomez preferred his life of luxury over freedom.[5]
