Gothic Remake is the upcoming action RPG game developed by Alkimia Interactive under its publisher THQ Nordic. It is meant to be a complete remake of the first game in the series.

Timeline

On December 13th THQ Nordic released a game developed by THQ Nordic Barcelona called Gothic Playable Teaser. It was a short demo containing the starting area of the Valley of Mines with new graphics, modernized mechanics and brand new content unseen in the original game. The game came with a survey that the players could use to provide feedback or whether the project should be continued at all.

On February 19th THQ Nordic announced that the teaser was well received by the players and that the development of the full game has begun. Survey results were published, revealing the opinions of the community about the teaser's aspects and the demographics.

A podcast with Reinhard Pollice took place on the 19th of July 2020 which shed some light about the game's development:

  • Everything from Gothic Playable Teaser will be changed to more closely resemble the original.
  • They want to make useless objects like benches more significant and more immersive.
  • The strategic approach to fights in the teaser lacked the Gothic spirit and didn't work well against animals.
  • The developers are making multiple prototypes of fighting system – it will be more tactical rather than action oriented.
  • Eating and drinking will have animations as opposed to the teaser.
  • The developers have a list of new ideas which are discussed whether they belong to Gothic or not.
  • The dissonance between the player and the hero in terms of in-game information will be reduced. The Nameless Hero will no longer talk to himself.
  • It has not yet been established, but the developers do not want to re-record the dialogues from the original, as the classic dubbing appears to be very iconic for many fans of the game.
  • The developer team consists of around 20-25 people.

On March 11th 2021 the Spanish studio Alkimia Interactive was confirmed to be the team behind the development. Four days later, during the 20th anniversary of Gothic, they released a concept art of a redesigned Scavenger on their official Twitter and Discord, and the game itself got its own page on Steam, which contained five screenshots depicting the current state of development.

On November 30th 2021 the studio confirmed that the development is still active, adding that there are 35 people working on the game. A Minecrawler concept art was also presented.

A first trailer was presented on August 2nd 2022. It depicted the Old Mine and minecrawlers which attacked two diggers. It was also announced that the studio Gate21 is behind 3D modelling and faces. On 18th of August it was said on Alkimia Interactive's official Twitter account that the music in the trailer was composed by Isaak "Orkz" Renn. 25th of August it was revealed that it was merely an anagram of the composer's real name: Kai Rosenkranz, who is known for making the music of the original game. That same day a Q&A took place, in which Kai answered people's questions, which revealed that:

  • New dialogues will be recorded with original voice actors if possible.
  • The map will remain the same size but existing locations might be slightly altered. It is possible that a few minor locations might be added.
  • The Old Mine is pretty much finished, but NPCs are still being worked on.
  • It was confirmed that the Remake will contain the original soundtrack remade as well as brand new tracks. It was originally a mix of orchestral and digital music, but currently Kai leans towards purely digital design.

On September 17th 2022 the German site Gamestar.de received an exclusive set of screenshots[1] of the development. They depicted the interiors of certain buildings of the castle, some fragments of the outer ring and the arena of the Old Camp. Besides that, some redesigned armors were revealed, including armors of the guards from the Old Camp and armors from the Sect Camp. Two months later, 4th of November a concept art of a Bloodfly was unveiled, then 14 day later goblins were also revealed.

23th of December 2022 the Old Camp was shown in more detail along with short demo of Kai Rosenkranz's remade soundtrack. The studio renewed their communication with the fans on 27th January 2023 while revealing a concept art of a Molerat.
