Gothic Sequel was the working title of a sequel to Gothic, which reached the early alpha stage before being canceled in favor of Gothic II. Only a few assets made it into Gothic II while the story and characters were completely discarded.
Public reveal
The project was not publicly known until late 2016 when rumors about a canceled project between Gothic and Gothic II began to spread on fansites.[1] Fans began showing off screenshots and video clips implying possession of a playable alpha build. Videos containing information about the canceled project were made by Youtubers, who got access for the purpose of documentation.[2]
On August 30 2017 an alpha build was leaked to the public, when a link to it was put in the description of a now deleted Youtube video.
The design documents, which are known to be in the possession of some fans and journalists, remain non-public besides a couple of character descriptions.[3]
History
After the release of Gothic Piranha Bytes split into two teams: One team (led by Alex Brügemann and Stefan Nyul) began development of a standalone add-on (Gothic Sequel), which went on for about 6 months before cancellation. The other team (led by Mike Hoge) worked on a shooter called Zerberus, which also got canceled. After both projects got canceled the teams merged back together and work on Gothic II began. A few assets from both projects were used in Gothic II. Disputes over this decision led to the leaders of the Gothic Sequel team leaving the company.
The playable alpha build contained the full first chapter and the beginning of the second chapter.
In the early 2000s a few modding teams were secretly given CDs, containing the Gothic Sequel to use assets in their mods, by members of Piranha Bytes. This is likely what led to the leak in 2017.
Story
In the alpha build
Just as in the beginning of Gothic II the Nameless Hero gets buried in the collapsed Sleeper's Temple and teleported out by Xardas weeks later leaving him weakened.
The banished Sleeper tries to return to the world by opening a portal to the demon realm, which has already resulted in the appearance of demons. Also madness and sickness are spreading in the Old Camp.
The Old Camp is now ruled by Diego instead of Gomez and banishment of the Sleeper led to earthquakes and widespread destruction of the camp. Repairs are underway at the start of the game.
King Rhobar II has come to the Valley of Mines and taken residence in the mountain fort. He sends Thora to the Old Camp, where she meets the Nameless Hero and eventually goes with him to the mountain fort to meet Milten and obtain permission to talk to the king.
