Mercenaries are a guild of fighters founded by Lee. In Gothic, they work for Water Mages, guarding them and providing with food and equipment in exchange for the prospect of freedom. In Gothic II, the group falls apart and moves to Onar's farm.
Origin

After the installation of the magical barrier, there was only one camp. But no later than 5 years ago a former general of Royal army named Lee, some of the magicians and other people from the Old Camp become dissatisfied with Gomez' reign and decide on leaving to create their own community where they won't be ruled over by an iron fist. They move in the cave to the west of the Valley of Mines and found a New Camp.
The founding members were: Lares, Homer, Rice Lord and Lee being behind the entire initiative. Lee becomes the informal leader of his gang — mercenaries, whose job is to provide New Camp with supplements and guard the Water mages in order to help them to break the barrier.
In Gothic, the mercenaries are:
- Baloro — a mercenary guarding the mine.
- Cord — teacher of combat skills.
- Gorn — a valued warrior from the New Camp. Most likely, he takes part in the convoy attacks on the way to the Old Camp.
- Jarvis — the guard of the Ore Mound entrance.
- Kharim — fighter on the Old Camp's arena.
- Blade — a resident of the camp.
- Lee — the leader of the mercenaries.
- Okyl — the head of a Free mine.
- Orik — Lee's companion.
- Torlof — a mercenary advising Nameless Hero on how to join the New Camp.
- Many other unnamed mercenaries.
In Gothic II, the mercenaries are:
- Alvares — a mercenary who collects rent money from farmers.
- Bennet — smith.
- Buster — the guard of Erol's hut. He got a promotion after the barrier had fallen.
- Cipher — merchant. He got a promotion.
- Cord — trainer in sword fight.
- Dar — swamp weed enthusiast.
- Engardo — companion of Alvares, collects rent money from farmers.
- Fester — a mercenary training on the road to Onar's farm. His job was to eliminate Field Raider's hive.
- Gorn — a mercenary trapped in Old Camp's castle.
- Jarvis — a mercenary that can be found in Thekla's kitchen.
- Lares — a mercenary in Khorinis. He was promoted to a mercenary after the barrier had fallen.
- Lee — the leader of the mercenaries.
- Patrick — Cord's apprentice.
- Torlof — Lee's right hand.
- Wolf — an unoccupied mercenary and hunter. He got a promotion after the barrier had fallen.
- Many other unnamed mercenaries.
Appearance
All of mercenaries can be distinguished by their armor. Made in white and blue colors, it usually consists of steel armour, leather and fur, with massive shoulder parts. All men carry their weapons and usually make a gruff impression.
Although there's no hierarchy between mercenaries, the novices are supposed to wear Light Mercenary's Armor, the others wear a Mercenary's Armor, and the most influential ones, such as Lee and Torlof, wear Heavy Mercenary's Armor.

Role
The athmosphere of brotherhood and power unites mercenaries to reach their goal: escape from magical barrier by helping Water Mages to realize their plan. Mercenaries despise any authority, prefering to obey the leader — Lee. They stay in a cave or in free mine, where they live their daily lives. The mercenaries' job includes:
- Guarding the Water Mages. In New Camp's cave, there's a high ground where magicians of water reside. Mercenaries guard and support them by carrying out their tasks. In exchange, Water Mages create an escape plan and heal the wounded mercenaries. They also allow mercenaries to take a part of extracted ore for themselves.
- Guarding the Ore Mound. The Ore Mound is protected from thiefs.
- Ore supervision. They are responsible for supervising the extraction of ore by the scrapers.
In chapter IV, the mercenaries organize the recapture of the free mine. They decide to send Gorn and Nameless Hero to kill Gomez's men one by one.
Gothic
Mercenaries' job is to protect water mages from Old Camp attacking them. They also protect scrapers in the free mine and the Ore Mound. New people who joined the camp joined Rogues, and their leader is Lares. Every rogue can be promoted to a mercenary, if he's worthy.
After old mine's collapse, Gomez decides to occupy Free mine and kill numerous mercenaries. Hovewer, Gorn and Nameless Hero eliminate Gomez's men. Soon after this attempt, the barrier falls and mercenaries gather around Lee and leave Valley of Mines, causing a wave of delinquency in Khorinis.
Nameless Hero can join mercenaries in Chapter I after previously being admitted to a New Camp as a peasant and after reaching level 10. level. If the hero becomes a guard in Old Camp, he can also join the mercenaries in Chapter IV after being banished from the Old Camp.

Gothic II

After the barrier had fallen most of the New Camp members split their ways. Some rogues became Raven's bandits, but the ones who followed Lee got a job on Onar's farm. These men are characterized by self-will and aggression. Their tasks include protecting farmers who were harassed by the militia of Khorinis and collecting rent from farms that have also bought mercenary protection. In return, the mercenaries receive a day's wage. Lee controls all the mercenaries and is able to punish them in case of inappropriate behaviour.
Some time before the main action, a mercenary named Sylvio with his men came from the southern mountains and joined mercenaries at Onar's farm. Sylvio initially recognized Lee's authority, but after some time began to incite mercenaries against him. As a result, the mercenaries were divided into two camps: former prisoners who are faithful of Lee and people from the mountains who subordinate to Sylvio. Sylvio's people are seen as more aggressive and troublesome, which causes dissatisfaction among farm's inhabitants. Hovewer, several mercenaries who support Lee also share support their point of view.
This conflict arranges itself as the rumors about dragons in Valley of Mines get to Onar's farm. Some of the mercenaries, including the group with Sylvio, head to the passage and become Dragon hunters.
Mercenaries are one of the three main factions that Nameless Hero can join in Chapter I. In order to do this, it's necessary to talk to Lee and Torlof, and then prove himself worthy to most of the mercenaries on the farm. After getting the majority of votes, Nameless Hero receives a special quest from Torlof. When it is done, Nameless Hero gets the opportunity to become a mercenary.
After the game
After Lee left the island and Khorinis was conquered, this organization ceased to exist.
