The Nameless Hero is the main protagonist of the Gothic series, as well as the main force behind the destruction of the Barrier of Khorinis, the slaying of the dragons and the end of the War of the Gods.
Personality
Although his behavior is largely up to the player, he consistently displays an ironic sense of humor and a high degree of self confidence. While he is loyal to his friends, he displays casual indifference to institutions and religions, and often behaves like a scoundrel.
In Gothic 3: Forsaken Gods his personality shifts to that of a righteous Myrtanian nationalist.
Background
Nearly nothing is known of his life previous to his imprisonment in the Barrier or the reason of his imprisonment. Even his name remains unknown as he never has a chance to say it.
The only pieces of information we receive are:
- In Gothic he tells Kirgo that he has been imprisoned in a small jail cell for two months before being thrown into the Barrier.
- The original paper box containing Gothic and the description in the Gothic Player Kit claim he is imprisoned despite being innocent.
- In an interview Mike Hoge answered that nobody is innocent, when asked what crime he committed[1].
- Gothic 3's manual states that he committed a minor crime.
- In Gothic 3 Rhobar II claims imprisoning him lead him to discover who he really is.
- He is declared to be the subject of various prophecies and chosen by various gods in the course of the games. Whether this special status already existed before his imprisonment or was acquired due to the events of the games, is left unanswered.
Gothic
- The Nameless Hero gets thrown into the colony.
- The Nameless Hero travels the Valley of Mines after being thrown into the Barrier of Khorinis.
- He makes friends and acquaintances in all three camps.
- After completing multiple tasks he joins one of the camps.
- Whether he joins the Swamp Camp directly or is sent there as a spy as a member of one of the other two camps, he helps the Brotherhood with the preparation of an invocation of their god - the Sleeper. For this purpose he brings them one of the focus stones, an old almanac and the eggs of a Minecrawler queen.
- The invocation ritual ritual fails and the Brotherhood loses faith in the Sleeper. Instead the Nameless Hero starts supporting the water mages' plan to destroy the Barrier by exploding a large amount of ore. After receiving the focus and almanac, Saturas realizes that the five focus stones, which created the Barrier, can be used to destroy it and sends the Nameless Hero to gather the remaining four. With the help of the Four Friends he succeeds in doing so.
- For this ritual they need the help of more mages and Saturas sends the Hero to ask the fire mages for help, but Gomez has already murdered them. So Saturas sends him to the most powerful magician in the colony - Xardas.
- Xardas knows that the water mages plan will fail as well and guides the Hero on a new path; a path which leads to the ancient temple under the orc city, where he finds a magical sword. Xardas identifies it as 'Uriziel' and deems it necessary for the way deeper into the temple. Xardas hints that the Sleeper is the real reason for the barrier having gone out of control and that defeating him will tear it down. He suspects that the Hero is a being mentioned in ancient orcish prophecies, a 'holy foe' who will defeat the Sleeper.
- The Hero steals the magical energy of the water mages' ore mound to empower Uriziel and is now able to kill the formerly invincible orcish high priest in the Sleeper's temple.
- In the sanctuary of the temple the Hero pierces the five enshrined hearts of the undead priest which anchor the Sleeper in this dimension and thus banishes it and frees everyone trapped in the valley.
Gothic II
- Having banished the Sleeper, the Hero is buried under the Sleeper temple's rubble after its collapse.
- After some time (13-30 days)[2], Xardas teleports the Hero from under the Sleeper temple's rubble to his tower. Xardas tells the Hero that the Sleeper with its last breath summoned a a new rising threat - dragons - and sends him to combat it. From Xardas, the Hero learns about The Eye of Innos, a holy amulet which is capable of making a human able to combat dragons.
- The Hero joins either the militia of the city of Khorinis, the monastery of the fire mages or the mercenaries of Onar. Whichever faction he joins allows him an audience with the leader of the paladins Lord Hagen.
- The Hero asks Lord Hagen to give him access to The Eye of Innos. Lord Hagen refuses and demands proof of the presence of dragons from the Hero by sending him to the Valley of Mines.
- In Valley of Mines, the Hero learns that the ore collection is going poorly (only 10 chests are collected instead of 200, supposedly, the minimum required according to Garond), and Garond, the paladins' expedition's overseer, writes a report for Lord Hagen that the Hero later brings to him.
- Lord Hagen grants the Hero permission to obtain the Eye of Innos, but when he arrives at the monastery to claim it, it was stolen by a novice, corrupted by a new type of enemy - seekers.
- The Hero takes the Eye of Innos back. However, it's been broken by the enemies. The Hero turns to 3 powerful mages (Xardas, Pyrokar and Vatras) and a blacksmith - Bennet), who together are able to restore its power, and leaves for the Valley of Mines.
- In the Valley of Mines, he defeats the 4 dragons leading the forces of evil in the region. Using the Eye of Innos he forces them to answer his questions and learns that their master has just been summoned to the Halls of Irdorath.
- Upon return from the Valley of Mines, the Hero learns the location of the Halls of Irdorath - an isolated island far away from Khorinis.
- The Hero gathers a crew, takes the Esmeralda - the ship the paladins arrived to the island on - and sets sail to the Halls of Irdodath.
- In the Halls of Irdorath, the Hero defeats the master of the dragons - the Undead Dragon - and then leaves for the mainland.
Gothic II: Night of the Raven
In Gothic II: Night of the Raven, the Hero has to resolve the addon's story before repairing the Eye of Innos, because Vatras refuses to leave the city to help repair it otherwise.
- Vatras refuses to leave unless the situation with missing people is resolved - the Night of the Raven storyline.
- The Hero goes to a hidden part of the island called Jharkendar to stop a servant of Beliar, Raven who has obtained a powerful evil artifact called the Claw of Beliar.
- Having stopped Raven, the Hero returns and repairs the Eye of Innos with the help he recruited.
Gothic 3
- The Hero and his four friends arrive to the mainland to find that people lost the war with orcs and are enslaved by them.
- The Hero learns that rune magic has been destroyed by Xardas.
- The war of the gods is ongoing.
- The Nameless Hero collects the 5 artifacts of Adanos from ancient temples throughout the accessible in Gothic 3 parts of The Continent.
- The Hero decides the outcome of the war of the gods by choosing Innos, Beliar or Xardas' solution (often called Adanos' way or ending).
Trivia
- In Gothic, the Nameless Hero is able to pick locks without learning to pick them despite not knowing most of the other skills in the game. That could indicate that he was imprisoned for burglary.
- According to Mike Hoge, the Nameless Hero is the avatar of Adanos.[1]
