Saturas is the leader of the water mages of the New Camp.
Background
Saturas was one of the magicians who created the Barrier spanning the Valley of Mines. Due to the influence of the Sleeper the creation of the Barrier went out of control and ended up trapping him inside it. At that time the prisoner Gomez started a rebellion against the guards. According to Xardas, Corristo and the other magicians helped Gomez take power over what would later be called the Old Camp.[1] After the success of the rebellion the magicians took up residence in the chapel of the castle.
Disputes between Corristo, the leader of the Magicians of Fire, and Saturas, the leader of the Magicians of Water, eventually lead the Water Mages to leave for the New Camp.[2] There they try to amass a massive amount of Magical Ore to blow up in a magical ritual, which is intended to destroy the Barrier.
Personality
Saturas is stubborn and reluctant to change his views.
Gothic
Saturas is the leader of the water mages in the New Camp and spends all day studying the properties of the magical ore for the purpose of destroying the Barrier.
In Cronos's letter Saturas is shown to be concerned about the possibility of the Old Camp taking steps to prevent their ritual to destroy the Barrier and pleads with Corristo to keep the relations between their camps peaceful.
The Nameless Hero first interacts with Saturas, when Cor Angar sends him together with the focus and the almanac to the New Camp to aid them in their effort to destroy the Barrier. When Saturas receives the focus stones and the almanac with the method of recharging their energy, he decides to use the five focus stones, which were used to create the Barrier, to aid in their ritual to destroy the Barrier.[3] He sends the Nameless Hero to gather them as he can't spare any of Lee's men due to the conflict with the Old Camp growing worse every day.
When the Nameless Hero succeeds in collecting all five focus stones, Saturas asks one last favor of him: He needs the help of the six fire mages of the Old Camp. He gives him a teleport rune to the pentagram in his chamber as a sign of his trust and sends him off to the Old Camp. But the Nameless Hero can only bring the bad news that all of the fire mages have been killed due to opposing Gomez's attack on the Free Mine.
If the Nameless Hero is a member of the Old Camp, he is banished from it in the fourth chapter due to aiding Saturas' escape plan. Saturas accepts him in the New Camp without hesitation. If he was a guard, he is sent to Lee to become one of the mercenaries, and if he was a fire mage, he accepts him as one of the water mages.
The death of the fire mages leave Saturas with no option other than sending him to Xardas, an exiled fire mage who is now known as the necromancer[4]. He has sent several messengers in the past, but none of them were ever heard of again. Despite the odds the Nameless Hero does return from Xardas, but he can't bring himself to tell Saturas what he learned from Xardas: that their plan is futile and the ore mound useless. Therefore Saturas never learns the truth and keeps holding out hope until he sees the Nameless Hero and Milten mess with the ore mound.
After the Nameless Hero drains all the energy from the ore mound to recharge Uriziel's magical powers, all the water mages turn hostile towards him and attack him on sight.

Mike Hoge forum post: The 5 focus stone were EMPTY - their power was spent. Y'Berion and Cor Kalom found a method to recharge it. The player even tells Saturas so.
Gothic, Info_Saturas_BOOK_Info: "I have this almanac... Y'Berion used it to charge the focus." - "Very good. We need the knowledge contained in this book to charge the five original focus stones." - ↑ The German term would be more accurately translated as demon summoner.
