The barrier is eventually removed by Xardas during the events of Gothic 3: The Beginning.

History

Long before the events of the game, a cult devoted to Beliar known as the Order of Blood emerged on the island, founded by the sorcerer Zarkan. After taking control of Initria, Zarkan expanded his dominion over all of Khorinis using the magic runes stolen from the monastery. In response, Zarkan's brother, the magician named Buthomar, gathered four chosen individuals and, with their help, banished Zarkan to the island of Tirith. The island was then sealed by a magical barrier, and the runes were hidden within five temples.

Following Zarkan’s death, leadership of the Order passed to Corgar. At this time, Zarkan's great-grandson, Dusaro, using the rune of control, assembled an army of followers and orcs to reclaim Khorinis. With the aid of Buthomar’s spirit, Xardas destroyed the magical barrier and gained access to the runes within Tirith's temples. Dusaro took advantage of the opening and invaded Khorinis, but his campaign failed, and he was ultimately slain by Xardas. The subsequent fate of the Order of Blood and the island of Tirith remains unknown.
