The Ancient People of Varant

From Gothic Wiki

The Ancient People of Varant or simlpy Ancient Ones were the first known followers of Innos and also the oldest known culture. They lived about a thousand years ago.

History

In the beginning the Eternal Wanderer led the nomads and when Innos spoke to him, the Wanderer and his people became Innos' servants.

Division

Not everyone was glad to worship Innos and so the people became divided.
Those who stayed became the People of Varant and stopped being nomads. They settled in Varant to build big cities and five temples for their fire god.

Downfall

The Ancient Ones started to erect a portal for Innos, so that he could rule over the world forever. But Beliar saw what they did and in his wrath he spoke to an ancient and powerful being to end his enemies.
But those ancient beings had no place on this world anymore and Adanos sent the flood to wash it off the earth. But the flood not only destroyed the ancient creature, animals and plants; it also annihilated the Ancient People of Varant...

Culture

Caste system

The most important part of the people were the five great castes

  • Warriors
  • Scholars
  • Priests
  • Healers
  • Guardians of the dead

The temple city of Al Shedim was divided into five districts. One for every caste.

Other professions than these five were never mentioned.

Religion

The leader of the Ancient Ones was the Chosen on of Innos and they all prayed to Innos. They built five temples in his honor.

Innos gave magic to the priest caste; fire magic. They were the first Magicians of Fire.

Expanse

Their ruins can be found from southern Varant to the south of modern day Myrtana. The most northern of their temples is located next to Trelis. Their artifacts on the other hand can be found much more northern; around Geldern and Silden.

Legacy

  • The Eternal Wanderer survived the flood and fought with his counterpart, the Beast of Beliar. Until the human slew the beast.
  • Akascha was another survivor. He wandered far and wide until he reached Nordmar. There he founded a new clan; the Clan of Fire thus keeping the tradition of Innos worship alive.
  • The "chronicles of dominance" preserve the history of the fire mages. They wrote it down from the beginning in Varant until now.

Relics

The Scepter of Varant was given to the Eternal Wanderer by Innos as token of his status. The scepter was also in possession of the last Chosen of Innos, King Rhobar II.

They also left an array of magical items like amulets or rings. Like the amulet of sorcery in the possession of the trader Ilja.

Their predominant textual medium were stone tablets. They can be found until this day and some contain useful knowledge that can strengthen the magical abilities of the reader.

The most sought after are the Divine Artifacts containing divine power. A ring, the amulet, the robe and the crown were locked in the temples. Akascha carried the Ring of Magic but the last temple already sank in the tides of the flood and so he took the ring with him to Nordmar.
