The Old Camp is one of the main three camps in the Colony. Gomez and the Ore Barons are its rulers. The Old Camp is the oldest and by far the richest camp established by the convicts in the Valley of Mines. It is centered around an old castle and is the only one that has an established trade deal with the outside world and the king's forces. The main source of income of the Old Camp is exploitation of the Old Mine. This explains the social structure of the Old Camp.

Description

History

Originally it existed solely as a castle stationing King's troops and the convicts which were tasked with mining the Magic Ore from nearby mining sites. To prevent the convicts from escaping, The King sent his most capable magicians in order to create a Magic Barrier. Something went awry during the process, resulting in the entire valley being encapsulated inside the barrier. The confusion caused by the incident was used by a group of convicts led by Gomez, in the event later known as Great Uprising, where the castle was overtaken and King's troops killed off, and the leaders of the uprising – Gomez, Raven, Arto, Scar and Bartholo usurping power in the area. Having no other choice, the King had to seek negotiation with the convicts in order to keep the ore supply going for the war effort.

Locations

The camp consists of two rings: the outer ring, which houses the Diggers and Shadows, and the inner ring where the Magicians of Fire and the Ore Barons are ruling over the camp, with Guards training and having their quarters in there. The main places of interest are the arena and the market in the outer ring, and the temple of the magicians, the smithy and Ore Barons' residence in the inner ring.

Northern Gate

The main entrance into the camp. Its guards can't be bribed. Right behind it there is an entrance into the castle guarded by Thorus, Diego's Hut, a pool of water and a stage. It is also an area patrolled by Bloodwyn who collects protection money.

Northern Gate

Southern Gate

A second entrance into the camp, built on the ruins of a collapsed tower. Mordrag, the messenger for the Magicians of Water and a merchant can be found here, and can take The Hero to the New Camp. It is patrolled by Jackal, a guard collecting protection money.

Southern Gate

Market

A marketplace where one can equip himself with weapons, armor and provisions. Fisk and Dexter are offering their wares here, and Baal Parvez is spreading the word about The Sleeper. In the evening, people are drinking and relaxing to the sound of Lute. This area is also patrolled by Jackal.

Marketplace

Arena

Arena hosted by Scatty. It attracts fighters from all camps, such as Kirgo, Gor Hanis and Kharim. Many diggers and shadows gather over the arena in the evening to watch the fights. Above the arena there is a smithy occupied by Huno, forging weapons for the people of the outer ring. This area was formerly patrolled by Nek, but was replaced by Fletcher after his disappearance.

Arena

Ore Barons' Residence

An residence of the Ore Barons, namely Raven, Scar, Arto and Bartholo, along with their leader – Gomez. Thorus, being a leader of the guards is also privileged to have his own room here. A very fancy place, full of decorations, paintings and food. Downstairs in the left wing there is an armory, and a kitchen in the right wing. The evenings here are spent feasting to the sound of lute and dancing women.

Ore Barons' Residence

Temple of the Magicians

It houses 6 magicians from the circle of fire. It contains a labratory, a bedroom and a pentagram upstairs. Nameless Hero can teleport here with a rune found in Xardas' Sunken Tower.

Temple of the Magicians

Smithies

The Old Camp has two smithies. One inside the castle, where Stone is forging equipment, and Skip selling it. It also has a small storeroom on the right. Another smithy is located in the outer ring, owned by Huno. A smithy consists of an Anvil, Smith's Fire and a Grindstone.

Dungeon

Nobody has checked in there ever since the Great Uprising. It is where most of the convict were held before the barrier was created. It contains four cells being watched over by a guard. During Chapter V – Guardians of the Portal, the Nameless Hero frees Stone the smith from there, Gomez being in possession of the key into his cell.

Barracks

All the guards are sleeping here, except those that are stationed in the outer ring. Another exception being Thorus who lives in the Ore Barons' Residence.

Shooting Range

A place for the guards to train their crossbow shooting abilities. Scorpio is teaching the guards both ranged and one-handed combat.

Storeroom

It is a basement found right under Ore Barons' Residence. Most of the wares from the outside world and some of the mined ore are stored. Bartholo has the key to it. Another storeroom is found inside a tower, where the cooks Balam and Omid are living.

Population and Hierarchy

Gomez calls all shots here, Raven being his right-hand man. Magicians of Fire are right below them. Thorus and his Guards are keeping the outer ring under control, and paying for protection is the most reliable option to feel safe. Some of the Shadows have huge influence in the camp, namely Diego, Scatty, Fisk, Sly, Fingers and Whistler. The only Digger in the camp that has anything to say is Gravo, whose influence is reaching even the Ore Barons themselves.

Diggers

Miners working in the mines, constantly exposed to poor living and working conditions, abusive Guards and the Minecrawlers, all for symbolic compensation. Diggers that have had enough usually flee to other camps, or become hermits such as Gilbert.

Shadows

Performing a diverse range of jobs, such as hunting, thieving, trading, doing various tasks or special missions for the Ore Barons, and even managing propeties like Scatty who is hosting an arena, and Ian being a chief of the Old Mine. Diego is a de facto their leader and has most to say. In order to become a Shadow, one needs to seek approval from other influential Shadows, and Shadows that have performed exceptional deeds have the honor of being able to join Guards, or Magicians of Fire.

Guards

Soldiers and warriors of the Old Camp. They are tasked with defending the camp, the mines and the digger from threats like minecrawlers. Some of them, however, can be abusive and intimidate people into paying for protection, like Bloodwyn. Thorus is the head of the guard force.

Magicians of Fire

Sorcerers with loyalty to the king and Innos himself. For unkown reasons they aided the convicts in usurping power during the Great Uprising. They are in contact with Magicians of Water and the outside world via messengers. Archmagician Corristo is the head of fire mages, preceded by Xardas before he left the circle of fire. All of them, aside Milten, are murdered by Gomez' henchmen in Chapter IV.

Ore Barons

Responsible for the trade with the outside world, mighty rulers of the camp, and as they claim, the entire colony. Formidable warriors, wearing fancy armors and wielding deadly weapons. Gomez is the leader of Ore Barons, Raven being his right hand, Bartholo managing the trade and goods, then finally Arto and Scar acting as bodyguards.

Trade

The Old Camp is the wealthiest one of the three in the colony. Their main source of income comes from trading ore with the king (about 200 bags a month), which is food, beverages, gear and even women. The Guards are also tasked with producing weapons and armor, although meant only for Gomez' people. Some of the Shadows are selling weapons and good, and the magicians from the castle are selling potions and magic items. Profits also come from the arena and hunting.

Gothic II

After the barrier fell the Old Camp was quickly abandoned. Some of the convicts died during the event, and some followed Raven to Jharkendar, and some fled the Valley of Mines to become common bandits. Soon after that a paladin expedition arrived and took a foothold in the castle, the outer ring being eventually burned by the Dragons.

Gothic Sequel

The camp was heavily damaged during the fall of the barrier. One of the towers is missing a piece of its structure, the palisade has many holes in it, and the roof over the market has collapsed. The Castle is the only part of the camp that remained untouched. The outer ring has a new smithy, and the palisade is undergoing renovations from workers. A Sick District has been established next to the marketplace, meant for people infected with a demonic plague, and the healers who are trying to help them. The camp became an asylum for war refugees that are coming into the valley.

Gothic Playable Teaser

  • If The Hero kills Mud, nobody in the camp will hold it against him.
  • The tower near the southern gate was destroyed by Drago's spell, depicted in Gothic Der Comic.
  • The Camp's musical theme is based on the Herr Mannelig song, which is played by In Extremo on the stage in the outer ring in Chapter II (only in german versions of the game).
  • In Gothic II, one of the towers contains a chest, which spawns a skeleton if opened.
  • In Gothic II, cutscenes depicting the dragons and orcs attacking the castle show certain people wearing armors from the first game.
